IN THIS LESSON
The Bird of Humanity
Excerpt: An Indigenous and Baháʼí prophecy, often shared by Lynne Twist, of a bird with two wings — one overextended, one folded — finally learning to fly in balance.
Story: Note: This lesson draws on a prophecy held by the Cherokee and Baháʼí peoples, widely shared in recent decades by Lynne Twist, co-founder of the Pachamama Alliance. The retelling below is original, written to honor the prophecy's meaning rather than reproduce any one telling word for word. An elder once gathered her grandchildren beneath a wide sky and asked them to imagine a great bird — the bird of humanity — that had been flying since the beginning of time. "For centuries," she said, "this bird flew with one wing fully open. Strong. Muscular. Always pushing forward." She stretched her arm out wide. "But its other wing stayed folded against its body — present, but unused."
One grandchild asked, "How did it fly at all, with only one wing working?" "In circles," the elder said. "Round and round, the same patterns repeating — striving, conquering, building, breaking. The open wing grew so powerful it became almost violent, simply trying to keep the bird aloft alone." She looked at each child in turn. "But the prophecy says that in this century — the one you are living in right now — the folded wing will finally begin to open. Not to replace the other wing. Not to dominate it. Only to balance it." "What happens when both wings open?" a child asked. "The bird stops circling," the elder said. "For the first time in a thousand years, it begins to fly straight. It soars." She closed her hand gently around the child's. "You are not just hearing this prophecy. You are living inside it. Every time you choose balance over domination, listening over force, partnership over control — you are helping that second wing open. The bird is waiting on us."
Reflection
Consider one area of your life — a relationship, a project, a leadership role — where one "wing" (force, control, achievement) has been doing all the work while the other (receptivity, patience, partnership) stays folded. Set a milestone: by [fill in your date], take one deliberate action to open that second wing. Record your commitment in the form below.
