Excerpt: From Isis to Shakti to Guanyin — a global journey through humanity's images of the Divine Mother.

Story: On a research trip through Southeast Asia, Professor Lin found herself standing before a statue of Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, her serene face turned toward the suffering of the world. A local guide explained that Guanyin "hears the cries" of all beings and responds with boundless mercy. Lin had studied Isis in Egypt, Demeter in Greece, Shakti's creative fire in Hindu temples — each utterly distinct, yet each carrying a similar thread: wisdom, healing, fierce protection, and unconditional love, imagined again and again in feminine form across unconnected civilizations. That night, journaling under mosquito netting, she wrote: "Maybe humanity keeps reaching for the same truth in different languages — that compassion is not a soft addition to power, but the very thing that makes power trustworthy." She thought of her own mother, a hard-working immigrant who had protected her fiercely and tenderly at once, and understood she had been raised, in her own way, by Guanyin's compassion all along.
