The Holy Mother in Scripture

Story: Rabbi Miriam often told her students that Wisdom was the oldest companion of God. "Before the mountains were settled," she'd recite, "Wisdom was there, rejoicing in the inhabited world." One student, David, asked why this mattered to him now, in his ordinary week of deadlines and traffic. Miriam smiled. "Wisdom doesn't call from the temple only. She calls from the marketplace. From your office. From the moment you choose patience over a sharp word." She told him of the Shekhinah, too — the Presence that did not abandon Israel in exile but dwelled among the suffering, accompanying rather than commanding from a distance. "God's oldest feminine image," she said, "is not a queen on a throne. It is a presence who stays." David thought of his grandmother, who never lectured him, only sat with him during his hardest years. He understood, suddenly, that he had already met the Shekhinah — he just hadn't known her name.
